A healthy, balanced soil ecosystem cannot thrive without soil worms
At Food2Soil, we believe that truly healthy, long-lasting soil depends on the right combination of organic matter, nutrients, and crucial biological life. Our biofertilisers are designed to feed the soil, not just the plant, and one of nature’s most important soil builders is the humble worm.
The power of worms for soil health
Worms are more than just wrigglers in the dirt; they play a vital role in creating a thriving ecosystem beneath the surface. They are tireless underground workers that help circulate nutrients, improve soil structure, and increase microbial activity. As they move through the soil, worms create channels that improve aeration and water infiltration. Their castings (worm poo) are nutrient-rich, helping to boost plant growth and support a living, breathing ecosystem underground.
By harnessing the power of these remarkable creatures, our biofertilisers not only boost soil fertility but also support a diverse range of soil life, from beneficial bacteria to fungi. This holistic approach ensures that the soil remains balanced and resilient, capable of supporting healthy plants and sustainable gardening or agricultural practices.
Needless to say, we’re big fans of worms. These quiet workhorses deserve far more recognition for the essential role they play in a healthy ecosystem, and we're thrilled to be able to ship live composting worms (almost) Australia wide.
Meet Food2Soil's worm farmers
Our worm journey began when Food2Soil founders, Josie and Annabel, teamed up with passionate and experienced worm farmer Brick Colley (Worm Affair) in Moruya, NSW. We connected him to help divert excess food waste from a local hospital and provide a feed supply for his growing worm colonies.
With Brick keen to expand his customer base, and Food2Soil committed to regenerating soils the natural way, the partnership was a perfect match. Since then, our worm farmer network has grown.
Food2Soil now works with a team of dedicated, experienced worm suppliers across four states in Australia. Introducing:
-
Rohan Watson (Rural Earth Worms) QLD
-
Peter Heindenreich (The Australian Worm Firm) SA
-
Stephen White (Worm Affair) WA
-
Brick Colley (Worm Affair) NSW also covers VIC and TAS
Supporting local Australian worm farms
This local approach means worms spend less time in transit, reducing stress and ensuring we comply with each state’s biosecurity regulations. By ensuring we have a partnering farmer in each state, we're minimising transportation distances – enhancing the health and wellbeing of the worms, maintaining overall quality as well as reduced shipping costs Furthermore, this localised strategy allows us to build stronger relationships with local farmers and suppliers, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.
In addition, by adhering to state-specific biosecurity regulations, we can mitigate the risk of introducing pests or diseases that could harm the local ecosystem. This commitment to responsible practices reflects our dedication to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Our focus on local sourcing also means we can respond more quickly to customer needs and preferences. Whether it’s specific worm species or tailored delivery schedules, this agile approach ensures that we can meet the demands of our clients effectively.
Caring for worms, every step of the way
Our worm farmers are experienced and deeply respectful of the living systems they manage. They feed their worms nutrient-rich organic matter – often rescued food waste – and take care not to over harvest baby worms, ensuring colonies stay strong and healthy. When it comes time to ship, they pack worms with plenty of bedding material to keep them safe and comfortable.
To avoid weekend delays, all worm shipments go out on Mondays or Tuesdays. All worm orders are shipped via Express Post to ensure they get to their final destination without being held at the post office during weekends. Please keep in mind that for week's where there might be public holidays interfering with general deliveries, we might opt to delay the shipping to the regular week following.
